Alice Clark, RSPCA Farm Animal Welfare Scientist: Why the RSPCA is campaigning to ban cages Paul Merrett, Head chef at The Victoria and co-presenter of BBC2’s Economy Gastronomy talks about Simply Ask
Don’t Be Polite. It’s Your Right. Simply Ask.

Simply Ask is Freedom Food’s latest campaign to help improve farm animal welfare.

Backed by top chefs including Raymond Blanc, Antony Worrall Thompson, and Paul Merrett, the campaign urges people to ‘Simply Ask’ about where their food comes from when eating out.

This is in a bid to get restaurants, pubs and cafes to source products from higher welfare farms such as Freedom Food, free-range and organic.

The campaign launches in response to news that a third of the population would boycott a restaurant that could not answer a question about where they source their products.*

And 60 per cent of us think we have a right to know the provenance of our food when eating out.  Let us know what you think by clicking on the poll opposite.

With a major push on eggs this year, the campaign will specifically urge people to ‘Simply Ask’ restaurants if they use eggs from hens that have not been kept in cages. And a host of MPs have added their support to the campaign by signing the 7 foot tall Simply Ask egg with Antony Worrall Thompson outside the Houses of Parliament.

Did you know?

Eighty per cent of whole and liquid eggs used in restaurants, pubs and cafes as well as in products (such as quiches and cakes) come from hens kept in cruel battery cages.  This compares to about 58 per cent of whole eggs produced for boxes sold in supermarkets.**

How can you help?

‘Simply Ask’ what eggs are being used next time you eat out and help make a difference to the lives of millions of hens. Journalist David Green decided to do just that. Having spoken to some of the country’s top chefs, he is voting with his fork – will you? You can read his article here.

The more people demand higher welfare products like free-range eggs when eating out, the more farmers will produce them and the more hens will be free from cages.
